You can ask the Gemini mobile app to make calls and send messages with WhatsApp. Just ask in a way that’s natural and conversational to you. You can even ask it to help you compose and edit your messages.
To help you quickly get started, WhatsApp in Gemini will work automatically on your device depending on your device app permissions and other settings. If you upgraded to Gemini from Google Assistant and your Personal Results setting was turned off, you may need to enable WhatsApp on your Apps page in Gemini settings.
Important: To check if WhatsApp in Gemini is enabled, check your Apps page in Gemini settings. You can disable Gemini’s access to WhatsApp from that page at any time. Learn how to manage apps in Gemini.
Before you use WhatsApp in Gemini
When you use WhatsApp in Gemini:
- Gemini cannot read or summarize your WhatsApp message history or any messages directly in WhatsApp. Learn more about what Gemini can’t do with WhatsApp.
- Instead, you can ask Gemini to read or reply to messages in your notifications, including those from WhatsApp. To do this, Gemini uses the Utilities app. Learn more about the Utilities app.
- Any data WhatsApp receives to fulfill your request, including messages that you send through WhatsApp using the Gemini app, are subject to WhatsApp’s Privacy Policy.
What you need
- Android phone or tablet.
- WhatsApp Messenger app. Get it on Google Play.
- The Gemini app, including as your mobile assistant. Learn more about the Gemini mobile app.
- The WhatsApp app is not supported on Gemini in Google Messages or the Gemini web app.
- Save contact info from your signed-in devices on.
- Contacts Android app permission given to the Google app.
Important:
- Apps are not available when using features powered directly by Google Assistant.
- You can use Gemini to make calls or send messages with WhatsApp, even when Gemini Apps Activity is off. If Gemini Apps Activity is off, a WhatsApp request that requires certain other apps may not work. For example, asking Gemini to “call the nearest pizza place" would require the Maps app which isn’t available if Gemini Apps Activity is off.
- You can only use Gemini to make calls or send messages on your connected smart watch when Gemini Apps Activity is on.
Enable the WhatsApp app
Important: WhatsApp in Gemini is designed to work automatically with the Gemini mobile app. You can disable Gemini’s access to WhatsApp at any time on your Apps page in Gemini settings. Learn how to manage apps in Gemini.
- Ask the Gemini app to call or message one of your contacts in WhatsApp.
- Tip: To tell the Gemini app to specifically use WhatsApp, include

in your prompt.

- If the WhatsApp app is disabled, you’ll get the option to enable it.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Tip: You can also say 'Hey Google' to ask Gemini to use a connected app. If 'Hey Google' doesn't work, check if 'Hey Google' and Voice Match are set up.

Tip: You don't always need to mention "WhatsApp" in your prompt. By default, the Gemini mobile app uses the last app it used to call or message the same contact.
Fix a problem
Gemini cannot send messages or make calls with WhatsAppIf WhatsApp isn’t working, try the following steps:
- Check that the WhatsApp Messenger app is installed on your device.
- Check that Save contact info from your signed-in devices is turned on.

Important: Even if you disable Gemini's access to WhatsApp, the Gemini mobile app can still access:

Important: To use WhatsApp with Gemini, the Google app needs permissions for Contacts.

What Gemini can’t do with WhatsApp
The following actions aren’t supported by the WhatsApp app in Gemini:
- Read or summarize your messages directly from WhatsApp.
- Send or read images, gifs, or memes in your messages.
- Send or play audio or videos in your messages.
- Read or reply to messages in your device notifications.
- Gemini only uses the Utilities app to read or reply to messages in your notifications, including those from WhatsApp. Learn more about the Utilities app.
About your data & WhatsApp
- The Gemini mobile app uses your data to help it choose the most helpful app to use and connect you with the right person. Learn more about your data and communication apps.
- If you delete your activity related to WhatsApp from your Gemini Apps Activity, it also deletes whether WhatsApp was the last app you used for specific contacts. The next time you ask Gemini to call or message someone and prefer to use WhatsApp, specify WhatsApp in your prompt.
- If you use WhatsApp with Gemini, any data WhatsApp receives to fulfill your request, including messages that you send through WhatsApp using the Gemini app, are subject to WhatsApp's Privacy Policy.
