Make calls & send messages on WhatsApp with the Gemini mobile app on Android

You can ask the Gemini mobile app to make calls and send messages with WhatsApp. Just ask in a way that’s natural and conversational to you. You can even ask it to help you compose and edit your messages.

To help you quickly get started, WhatsApp in Gemini will work automatically on your device depending on your device app permissions and other settings. If you upgraded to Gemini from Google Assistant and your Personal Results setting was turned off, you may need to enable WhatsApp on your Apps page in Gemini settings.

Important: To check if WhatsApp in Gemini is enabled, check your Apps page in Gemini settings. You can disable Gemini’s access to WhatsApp from that page at any time. Learn how to manage apps in Gemini.

Before you use WhatsApp in Gemini

When you use WhatsApp in Gemini:

What you need

Important:

  • Apps are not available when using features powered directly by Google Assistant.
  • You can use Gemini to make calls or send messages with WhatsApp, even when Gemini Apps Activity is off. If Gemini Apps Activity is off, a WhatsApp request that requires certain other apps may not work. For example, asking Gemini to “call the nearest pizza place" would require the Maps app which isn’t available if Gemini Apps Activity is off.
    • You can only use Gemini to make calls or send messages on your connected smart watch when Gemini Apps Activity is on.

Enable the WhatsApp app

Important: WhatsApp in Gemini is designed to work automatically with the Gemini mobile app. You can disable Gemini’s access to WhatsApp at any time on your Apps page in Gemini settings. Learn how to manage apps in Gemini.

  1. Ask the Gemini app to call or message one of your contacts in WhatsApp.
    • Tip: To tell the Gemini app to specifically use WhatsApp, include @WhatsApp in your prompt.
  2. If the WhatsApp app is disabled, you’ll get the option to enable it.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Tip: You can also say 'Hey Google' to ask Gemini to use a connected app. If 'Hey Google' doesn't work, check if 'Hey Google' and Voice Match are set up.

Examples

  • Help me write a congratulations message to [contact name] on their 25th anniversary.
After Gemini's response: Actually, make it a haiku.
After Gemini's response: Send it to [contact name] in WhatsApp.

Make a call

Try these example prompts:

  • I need to talk to [contacts name]. Can you call them on WhatsApp?
  • Call [contact first name]’s [mobile, home, work] number with WhatsApp.
  • @WhatsApp call [contact full name].

Send a message

Try these example prompts:

  • Send a WhatsApp message to [contact name].
  • Text [contact name] [message] on WhatsApp.
  • Ask [contact name] [question] on WhatsApp.

Tip: You don't always need to mention "WhatsApp" in your prompt. By default, the Gemini mobile app uses the last app it used to call or message the same contact.
